(July 28, 2003 WWLP) - The "Bad Boys", Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back with more car crashes, daredevil stunts and all around yahoo heroics to keep action fans contented for two and a half hours. They're a couple of screw up Miami Detectives getting their biggest assignment yet, to bring down a Cuban drug operation. And this time they'd better not screw up. Smith and Lawrence have learned how to hit it off like a couple of stand up comics with just the right blend of chemistry and charisma. Director Michael Bay, a master orchestrate of this sort of mayhem, know enough to keep the action moving at lightning speed, and exploiting how differently our buddy cops approach living dangerously. Crime fighting must run in the family when Lawrence's sister, Gabrielle Union goes undercover to trap the murderous drug kingpin, who fits in nicely as the colorful, slightly eccentric villain, necessary to the lifeblood of an effective underworld thriller. Warning, the picture occasionally punctuates the action and humor with some gruesome business that may unsettle the squeamish. Perhaps motivated by the creative highway carnage of "Matrix Reloaded", "Bad Boys 2" pulls out all the stops to turn its highlight car chase into what could well become a theme park thrill ride or at the very least a hyped up video game. Regardless, Director Michael Bay has raised the bar that future action Directors will surely emulate. This is a non-stop action adventure that successfully attempts to go the competition one better, and "Bad Boys 2" manages to stay ahead of the game with 3 stars. You leave the theater feeling either exhilarated or completely exhausted.
